How do you convert square meters to square kilometers?

Converting square meters to square kilometers is relatively simple. One square kilometer is equal to 1,000,000 square meters. So to convert a value in square meters to a value in square kilometers, you have to divide the value by 1,000,000.

Example: You want to know how many square kilometers a piece of forest with an area of 500,000 m² has.

Step 1: Divide the area of the woodland by 1,000,000. 500,000 m² ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.5 km²

Step 2: Round the result to the desired number of decimal places. In this example, we round to two decimal places. 0.5 km² (rounded to 2 decimal places)
